Anonymous asked: At what point in your career did you get married and how long after that did you start having kids? I'm an aspiring rapper (aka broke bum) and I think I want to marry the girl I'm currently dating, but I'm not sure I can put the right amount of effort into both pursuits at the same time. Any advice?
Wow. You just said a mouthful, my man. I didn’t really start making music until I was in college. I was married in ‘97 and my first kid was born in ‘98. My full-time career in music then got kicked up in ‘99 and ran until 2006.
To be completely honest, it’s a tough tough balance to keep to be the husband and father you need to be while trying to make a full-time career out of music….ESPECIALLY hip-hop. You see, hip-hop, particularly MC’ing if a spectator sport. It’s not background music. So, you can’t get hired by your local tavern to play a weekly where they pay you $300 - $500 for mood music. You have to travel to make a living. Period, point blank.
That’s the rub. If you’re young and you’re dedicated to making a life of this, then maybe you need to take a good hard look at getting married right away. Conversely, if you think this is the woman of your dreams and you feel called to get married, then keeping your music as a secondary income or even a hobby is probably not the worst idea in the world.
I hope this helps.
